October – Dietitian’s Healthy Pick of the Month!

Happy National Apple Month!!

Apples are finally in season and there are many varieties of apples to choose from. No matter what variety you choose, you can always feel great about eating apples. They are naturally free of fat, cholesterol, and sodium, low in calories, and a good source of dietary fiber. Apples are also a great baking fruit.

This month, Covenant Care facilities will be cooking up a variety of recipes using apples, as well as creating displays to educate our staff, residents and families. The kitchen will incorporate apples in some creative ways, from pastries, muffins, crisps, to salads, pork loin, bacon apple cheese burgers, or chicken apple wraps. This is all part of the Enhanced Dining services which includes the “Dietitians Healthy Pick of the Month”.

A couple fun facts:

A survey by the American Pie Council and Crisco found that apple pie is the favorite flavor among one out of four Americans, followed by pumpkin pie, chocolate pie, lemon meringue, and cherry.

The term “as American as apple pie” traces back to 14th century England. The Pilgrims brought their pie-making skills, along with the apple seeds to America. As the popularity of apple pie spread throughout the nation, the phrase grew to symbolize American prosperity.
