Did you know?

The fuzzy peach is a member of the rose family and originated in China. Top producers of the peach are China and Italy. California growing 50% of the US peaches. The peach’s scientific name, Prunus persica, is a direct reference to the fruits travels to Persia along the Silk Road You can buy two main varieties of peaches: clingstone (the flesh sticks to the stone) and freestone (the stone is easily separated from the flesh).

Health Benefits of Peaches

Vitamins: A, C, E, K and six of the B complex vitamins. Helping you achieve optimal vision, improve immune functions and healthy skin. Antioxidants: which may help prevent cancer and heart disease. Anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and anti-obesity properties. Fiber helps aid in digestion, preventing constipation, bloating and eliminating waste.

Tropical Peach Smoothie

1-14 oz can Chilled California Cling Peaches in light syrup (398 mL)
1 cup chilled coconut milk (250 mL)
1 sliced ripe banana 1
1 tsp rum extract (5 mL)
1/2 tsp vanilla (2 mL)
Nutmeg, optional

Method

1. In blender, combine peaches (with syrup), coconut milk, banana, rum extract and vanilla. Blend until smooth.

2. Serve cold with a pinch of nutmeg, if desired.

Makes approximately 3 cups (750 mL).

Option: Use a splash of rum instead of rum extract.

Summer Peach Salad

1 can sliced California cling peaches 28 oz/796 mL
2 grapefruit or oranges
4 California canned pear halves, drained and sliced 4
Boston or butter leaf lettuce, washed
1 cup sour cream 250 mL
1/4 cup lemon juice 50 mL
2 tsp brown sugar 10 mL
2 garlic cloves, minced 2
salt and pepper to taste
1/4 cup snipped chives 50 mL
1/2 cup sliced almonds, toasted 125 mL

1. Drain peach juice and save for thinning dressing. Cut grapefruit into segments removing as much of the white pith as you can. Slice pear into wedges. Gently toss fruit together. Arrange a few washed lettuce leaves on each plate. Spoon fruit onto lettuce. Whisk sour cream with lemon juice, sugar, garlic, salt and pepper. Thin with reserved peach juice. Stir in chives. Drizzle over salad. Sprinkle with almonds.
