Rehabilitation...

Our facility has been designed to offer comprehensive services to meet the needs of Medicare and other insurances. Our objective in rehabilitation is to return each resident to their highest practicable functioning level. This often means a return to the community and/or a greater ability to function independently. Below is a list of many services provided by our licensed physical, occupational and speech therapists. In addition, we offer services using our state of the art therapeutic equipment to accelerate their recovery and their return home.

Examples of our therapeutic equipment are as follows:

Our omnicycle:a computerized bicycle for the arms and legs which provide various resistance in the modes of cardiac, neuro and ortho to enhance recovery. The computer screen records muscle out-put percentages between the left and right side and a full digital report of the workout.

Our standing box: Used for our lower level patients to promote upright posture and weight bearing while engaging in upper body or cognitive activities all the way to our Victory garden, for our higher level "green thumbs" who have a passion for horticulture and growing flowers and vegetables. Highland Healthcare offers the individualized treatment plan unique to your loved one.

Our Wii gaming system: This popular gaming system sweeping the nation is displayed on a 42 inch screen to work on balance, range of motion, cognition, sequencing and eye/hand control. Residents can enjoy a relaxing game of billards or fishing or a competitive match of tennis or bowling. Who says rehab isn't fun?

Rehabilitation Therapy Program

Physical Therapy
Our physical therapy programs include treatment for Neurological, Orthopedic and Rheumatological conditions, as well as other injuries and illnesses that respond to skilled therapy. We have therapists who are specially trained in wound care, balance disorders, pain management, urinary incontinence, and various advanced modalities.

Occupational Therapy
Our occupational therapy programs focus on improving residents' ability to manage everyday living skills. Individualized programs maximize residents' ability to re- learn basic living skills such as eating, dressing, bathing, cooking, toileting and improve their functional mobility for optimum independence.

Speech and Language Pathology
Our Speech Pathologists assist patients in overcoming problems with speech, hearing, comprehension, expression and swallowing. They evaluate, plan and conduct treatment for all speech deficits, voice problems and cognitive impairments.

Advanced Modalities Program

What are Modalities?

Modalities are any devices or equipment used to facilitate therapy outcomes. Traditional treatments, such as hot packs, only heat up tissue down to a fraction of an inch for a short duration. In contrast, our ultrasound and diathermy machines can be used to heat tissue to a depth as much as 3 centimeters or 1-1/4 inches with a much longer lasting effect.

Our new modalities include the following:

Short-wave diathermy: A drum-like machine, approximately 8 inches in diameter, which puts out magnetic waves to increase deep tissue temperature, circulation and elasticity.

Ultrasound: A smaller wand-like instrument, which puts out sound waves and has much the same effect as the above, used to treat smaller areas of tissue.
Electrical stimulation (e-stim): Two machines that use electrodes placed on the skin through which electric impulses are sent to facilitate muscle contractions.

What are the modalities used for?

Modalities are used in conjunction with skilled therapy and are useful for:

- Increasing circulation
- Decreasing swelling and edema
- Deep heating tissue to allow for greater elasticity, useful for contracture management
- Decreasing pain

- Increasing muscle movement, range of motion, strength

Examples of modality use in the therapy department:

- Pain management for arthritis, stroke
- Reduce swelling in hands and feet
- Increase circulation & heat tissue before stretching joints to increase ROM & decrease contractures
- Stimulate muscle movement & increase muscle strength in patients with limited ROM, as with a stroke or joint injuries

Our clinical programs are designed to address the complex needs of patients experiencing a variety of neurological and musculoskeletal conditions. Applications are used to:

- Relieve pain to assist in obtaining greater function
- Treat muscle dysfunction
- Increase circulation reduce abnormal tone

Contracture Management Program

Assumptions about the treatment of contractures:

- Contractures are preventable, treatable and reversible
- Technology is available to significantly restore range of motion for most residents
- Contractures once considered hopeless are now treatable
- Contractures are caused by a loss of normal muscle tone and voluntary control over movement.

Underlying disease dysfunctions can include:
- Stroke
- Parkinson's disease
- Head Injury
- Alzheimer's Disease
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Spinal Cord Injury Cerebral Palsy

Treatment interventions for contractures:
- Mobilization
- Multiple modality option
- Passive stretch technique
- Neuro-development therapeutic exercise
- Application of orthotics
- Outcomes driven functional clinical program
- Restorative nursing program
- Continuum of care

Wound Management Program

The scope of practice of physical and occupational therapists includes prevention, identification, alleviation and resolution of acute and chronic soft tissue injury. The physical testing, measurement, assessment and treatment the therapists offer provides an invaluable dimension in the treatment of wounds including:

- Designing or recommendation of splints, orthotics, & support surfaces
- Positioning and safety devices providing education specific to the resident's needs

Urinary Incontinence Program

Urinary incontinence is a common problem among the geriatric population. We offer a program which focuses on strengthening the bladder and pelvic floor muscles which:

- Decreases number of episodes of incontinence
- Allows participation in activities that residents may not have been able to do before that increases quality of life
