There had been some extra excitement days before
June 30 at the Center about something that was about to happen,
but I was only aware of the need for a special dress Dorothy would
need for that day. Then, I heard there would be a celebration at
the Center for our anniversary.
The morning of the 30th when I entered the Center there seemed to
be a buzz among the residents. When I reached room 31, our daughters,
Roberta and Ruth were putting the Hawaiian dress on Dorothy in preparation
for the party. In the inner court of the Center there was a canopy
with a table in front and a sign above it with the words "HAPPY
ANNIVERSARY" on it.
Dorothy was wheeled out in her bed and placed under the canopy and
a chair was placed by it for me. A beautifully decorated cake was
shown to us and then placed on the table. The words Eugene and Dorothy
were written on the top in script letters. There were baloons tied
to the chairs in
front of the tent and many of the residents of the Center were sitting
around in their wheelchairs. Daughters, Ruth and Roberta and two
attendants were making Dorothy comfortable.
